Can I represent myself?
Self-representation can quickly become overwhelming and stressful. While it is possible to handle your own matter, a lawyer who is familiar with the ins and outs of the legal world will greatly reduce the stress and confusion that can arise from legal matters. In today's world, it's also worth noting the Alberta Courts ruling on the use of Artificial Intelligence when it comes to courts, see more here!

what is a will and WHY should i have one?
A Will is a legal document that determines how your property will be distributed when you die. All Wills must follow the requirements of the Wills Act to be valid. A Will ensures that your property will pass to those you want it to after your death. If you die without a Will, your property will be distributed as per the Intestate Succession Act which does not give you the legal control a Will does after death. Personal Directives and Enduring Powers of Attorney are other important documents to consider when preparing a Will. See more info on Wills & Estates here.
what is the difference between a will, power of attorney, and personal directive?
A Will only comes into effect after death whereas a Power of Attorney and Personal Directive take effect when an individual is still alive but has lost the mental capacity to make their own decisions. Southern Alberta Law Offices offers a step-by-step process and comprehensive questionnaires to ensure that the drafting of these documents runs seamlessly.
